41 Years Left
Franklin County's landfill has only 41 years of capacity remaining, while the region is projected to grow to 3 million people in 25 years.
76% Recyclable
SWACO estimates that three-quarters of landfill material could be reused, recycled, or composted instead of buried.
54% Diversion Rate
Columbus already achieves one of the highest waste diversion rates in the Midwest – and we're working to do even better.
Columbus Recycling Expansion Initiative
Ensuring Every Resident Can Recycle, No Matter Where They Live

The Columbus Region is growing fast, but our landfill isn't growing with us. Franklin County's landfill has only 40 years left, and we're projected to grow to 3 million people in the next 25 years. The good news? About 76% of what goes into our landfill could actually be recycled, reused, or composted. The challenge? Only residents in single-family homes and small buildings currently have guaranteed access to recycling services. Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche is working to change that, expanding recycling access to multi-family and mixed-use buildings across Columbus. When everyone can recycle easily, we extend our landfill's life, support our local economy, and build a more sustainable city.
Key Outcomes & Benefits

Recycling Access for All Residents
Finding ways to expand recycling services to multi-family and mixed-use buildings means everyone in Columbus can recycle easily, regardless of where they live or what type of housing they call home.

Extending Our Landfill's Life
With 76% of landfill waste being recyclable, better access to recycling services could significantly extend the 41-year lifespan of our regional landfill as Columbus continues to grow.

Supporting Local Economy
Increased recycling supports Columbus's circular economy, creating entrepreneurship opportunities and careers in waste reduction, processing, and reuse industries.

Meeting Climate Goals
Better recycling helps Columbus achieve the ambitious sustainability targets outlined in our Climate Action Plan while avoiding costly landfill expansion or waste shipping to
other communities.
